In the latest version (being rolled out at the moment) there are new style reports that use the intelligent, full text search that you find in the Global Search. This allows you to mix full-text search with custom grid reports - where you can add fields/filters/sorts etc. Hopefully the best of both worlds.
Worth noting, that you can open the standard search reports we have created and use "save as" to save a custom version that has specific filters etc.
Or, if you want to start from scratch, start your report with a "search" entity. e.g. the "Contact Search" (expandable to Contact entity) or the "Product Search" (expandable to Product entity) etc.
