At the moment when you close off the opportunity it greys out the stage that you closed the opportunity from e.g. if you close the opportunity as Won from the quote stage the pipeline along the stop of the opportunity shades Quote & displays it as Won (Quote). However, this can lead to confusion as the last stage in the pipeline is closed & it would be useful if this was shaded instead so you can see visually that you're at the end of the pipeline. See screenshot for reference.
If the pipeline is setup properly I dont think it works like this (or at least not any more). If the close status is "won" then that will have a positive outcome and it will be automatically listed at the end of the pipeline.
The greyed out styling (in the screenshot) is only used for negative or neutral outcomes.
