When you apply grouping to a report i.e. an opportunity report and you group by current status the system will use the status code and not the status name to group the report.
The status code cannot be changed once a status has been created.At the moment the report will not show the statuses in alphabetical order.
Being able to group by the status name means that the report would be grouped alphabetically.
