Embed links to Custom field

A customer has a custom field in which they add links to project on an external system. They can embed a link into the Activity but this often gets lost and is hard to report on, so they're using a custom field. Only problem is the link isn't recognised as a link and needs to be copy pasted. It would be great to see https as a link automatically, of have links as an option for custom fields
