The Product Item List/Detail plug in allows you to specify the file extension of the images being output, which can save loading time when loading JPGs compared to PNGs.
The groups.net plug in has no functionality to be able to specify the filetype. There should be a dropdown that would allow you to choose the filetype for the group images displayed.
